Cwmni Egino – named after the Welsh word meaning “to germinate” – was established by Welsh Government in 2021 to develop socio-economic growth opportunities from new nuclear development in North Wales. The company focused on exploring potential development options to build on the nuclear legacy at Trawsfynydd, as well as a promoting opportunities more broadly from new nuclear in Wales, and for Wales in the nuclear sector.
Cwmni Egino’s work began with assessing the potential for small-scale nuclear development at the Trawsfynydd site. It advanced a detailed understanding of the site and presented a business proposition to the Welsh and UK Governments, setting out the case for new nuclear development. It also worked to keep Trawsfynydd as a viable option for the future, including supporting private sector interest in deploying small modular reactor technologies and producing a Site Information Pack for potential developers.
Alongside this, Cwmni Egino led a wider programme of activity to strengthen the case for nuclear-related investment in the area. This included developing proposals for an Innovation, Business and Skills Centre at Trawsfynydd, supporting links between the nuclear and other clean energy and technology sectors, and contributing to regional initiatives including the North Wales AI Growth Zone. It also worked with stakeholders across the region to improve coordination, publish a nuclear investment prospectus, and assess local supply chain readiness for emerging nuclear opportunities.
Through its collaborative and place-based approach, Cwmni Egino helped build partnerships, knowledge, and shared ambition across industry, government, and communities. Its work emphasised social value, aligned with the Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act, aiming to ensure that nuclear and other major projects deliver lasting social, economic and environmental benefits – now and in the future.
Although the company ceased operations in March 2026, it has left behind strong foundations for future development, with North Wales well positioned to play a continuing role in the UK’s nuclear and clean energy future.
