Cwmni Egino welcomes announcement on Great British Nuclear

Cwmni Egino, the company behind plans to bring Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) to Trawsfynydd, has welcomed today’s Budget announcement confirming the launch of Great British Nuclear (GBN).

Alan Raymant, Cwmni Egino Chief Executive said:

“We very much welcome the confirmation of funding for GBN to drive forward a new nuclear programme in the UK.

“There is strong policy backing for new nuclear to support the transition to net zero, strengthen energy security, and boost the economy. What’s needed now is a pipeline of projects to achieve the UK Government’s ambitions for new nuclear.

“The formation of GBN is a big step towards delivering on policy aspirations, by providing greater clarity and certainty regarding where, when and how projects will be deployed.”

Cwmni Egino is the UK’s first site-specific development company for SMRs and is putting together detailed proposals for deployment at the former nuclear power station site in Trawsfynydd.

The company is yet to select a technology partner for the project, and says it will work with GBN to consider options.

Alan added: “We believe that Trawsfynydd presents the first, most credible opportunity for GBN to kick start a long-term programme of SMR projects in the UK, and catalyse significant economic growth locally, regionally and nationally.

“Our plans are more advanced than other sites suited to small scale nuclear, and we’re confident that our project can be ready for approval by the latter part of this decade – in line with the UK Government’s energy security priorities.

“Cwmni Egino provides a development vehicle to take the project forward, and we stand ready to work with GBN as it progresses with siting and technology selection.”
